Hot Topic: Future Jobs—Or Not

The Pew Research Center [http://www.pewresearch.org/] has released the results of its survey of technologists, scholars, practitioners, strategic thinkers, and education leaders on the future of workplace training in the next decade. More than 1,400 participants responded to the survey, which Pew conducted with Elon University’s Imagining the Internet Center [http://www.elon.edu/e-web/imagining/] in summer 2016.

In addition to addressing how disruptive technologies such as IT, AI, automation, and robotics may develop, Pew asked respondents to focus on the potential disruptions these technologies may have on capitalist systems and particularly on jobs.

While a narrow majority (52 percent) of the respondents said technological advances will create more jobs than they destroy, that doesn’t mean things will be easy for tomorrow’s human workers. For the 30 percent of respondents expressing pessimism about people’s prospects in a tech-dominated economy, a major concern is how people will meet their basic needs and the impacts of these needs on economic systems.

If, as Microsoft researcher Jonathan Grudin says, “People will create the jobs of the future, not simply train for them,” education and learning will need to adapt to new priorities. Human skills that will be required include creativity, collaboration, abstract thinking, complex communication, and social and emotional intelligence. But, Pew reports, about “a third of respondents expressed no confidence in training and education evolving quickly enough to match demands by 2026.”

Among the recommendations for adapting education and learning was to emulate the environments human learners already exist in, such as those of gaming and social media. Psychologist and futurist Dana Klisanin of Evolutionary Guidance Media R&D, wrote, “Educational institutions that succeed will use the tools of social media and game design to grant students’ access to teachers from all over the world and increase their motivation to succeed.… Online educational programs will influence the credentialing systems of traditional institutions, and online institutions will increasingly offer meet-ups and mingles such that a true hybrid educational approach emerges.”

The bottom line, according to AAI Foresight’s Timothy C. Mack, is that, “In the area of skill-building, the wild card is the degree to which machine learning begins to supplant social, creative and emotive skill sets.”

Europe’s Summer of Futuring

Moves in the Field

James Dator is retiring as director of the Hawaii Research Center for Futures Studies. [http://www.futures.hawaii.edu/] He will be succeeded by Jarius Grove, who is on sabbatical until summer 2017.

VR and AI Development

The trouble with virtual reality (VR) is that science fiction and other popular media have so raised expectations that people are always disappointed, because they all think that fully functional VR is already here. But what VR is really good at is storytelling, simulator games, and training of all sorts.
This is to distinguished virtual from augmented reality (AR), which is also in development. However, nobody has unrealistic expectations about AR, which strongly challenges present assumptions that it will be very disruptive. There continues to be a dichotomy between physically visiting a place or event and virtually doing so. There are so many physical aspects to actual presence—smell, taste, touch—that only very limited opportunities to simulate them are now possible (such as haptic gloves). One of the most appealing aspects of real presence is serendipity: the unexpected event or outcome.
Deep human impulses are released in gaming. Many experienced players even provoke their opponents to play more emotionally and thus make mistakes. While fun can be transformational—physically, emotionally, and cognitively—there is seldom complete transfer of skills in gaming or simulations. A good example is a firefighter simulation in a burning building, which does not adequately prepare one for the heat, choking gases, and real danger. And so outcomes and success levels are different for each person.

Clinical depression simulations have been developed to help social workers and therapists understand clients. While not always successful, these simulations do help build a community of learning between “us and them.” Different approaches to teaching work skills to a mixed group of students affect them in different ways and are successful on only a certain percentage of participants, even if the game or simulation has been well designed. It is all too easy to build bad games that work for no one, and there are lots of them around. The ideal game may be one that creates the opportunity for discussion and decision making among players during the game. And again, there is quite a wide range in cognitive/rational responses and understandings taken away from a single game by a diverse group of players.
One of the challenges in VR game design is determing what assumptions the designer can make about players' prior knowledge. Also, in the United States, there is less independent game playing; rather, gaming is usually on multiplayer online settings with a single screen for each player.
Online gaming (streaming) is becoming more of a spectator sport, but live spectator sports will endure—even broadcast spectator sports that offer no audience controls. Holographic technology is improving rapidly, however, moving toward completely immersive experiences. And this holographic view is unsually unique to each viewer, depending on where they are standing in the available viewing space, enabling multiple players/viewers to share different viewpoints and values.
Will new technologies allow for virtual visits to national parks and experiences of events that allow for greater levels of participation and observation detail? Interactive playing rather than participating in live games and events could lead to changes in attitude and even in thinking about a subject. Many games are actually on a continuum between gaming and reality.
Gaming in the workplace is growing, but it is not always digital. Games such as Escape Route (Locked Room Puzzles) now popular in employee development are often more exercises for observation, analysis, and team building. It consists of half a dozen people in a physically confined space, given clues for escape with the goal of developing a successful team approach to solve the problem. But one outcome can be a “trough of despair” where people stop responding to the game structure and innovative behavior declines. Because no one game works for everyone, it raises the questions of why people play any specific game at all. This requires understanding your community of players.
It is clear that games can communicate complex ideas to their players in ways that seem intuitive. Games can communicate meaning. New York University's Game Center and University of Southern California's Annenberg Innovation Lab are working in this arena. One important thing that games offer to their players is engagement. In order for this engagement to develop, the game must invite iteration—repetition builds engagement over time. But it is very difficult to anticipate how all players will respond to any specific game, and not everyone seeks empowerment. That lack of control can be the novel and intriguing experience. And role playing can provide all sorts of new experiences
At Google, researchers are working on natural language solutions, leading to new machine learning frameworks, including deep learning projects such as Tensorflow. The whole deep learning area is moving ahead quite quickly, as computing power advances. Besides Google, Facebook and Microsoft are committing large resources, and a number of smaller companies are also involved.
Machine-learning tools drive advances in robotic movement controls and energy management, which are two of the most difficult challenges at present. Virtual models developed to build robotic systems often were poorly conceived or even wrong—they did not work in practice. There was not enough real-world input into building those systems, and the outputs were often full of digital noise. For example, task-training data is often too scarce to inform task design.
Another real challenge is crafting strategies for interpreting emotional interaction—and reading opponents in game playing. This research is being led by Google Deep Mind (renamed after Deep Mind Technologies in UK was acquired by Google). Graphic processing units are often more effective than CPUs to communicate problem solving strategies, and the majority of present AI work relates to assisting humans rather than beating humans at games. This is not artificial but augmented intelligence.
Many are concerned about black box intelligence with full agency and independence—so some are designing and bulding attention-tracking tools allowing us to see what was incorporated in an AI decision. This will help us better understand the decision steps involved and replicate them—and help us understand mistakes, as well.
It is nearly impossible to look out 20 years in AI research because change is happening so fast. Even 10 years out is too far ahead to be accurate. But one thing that will happen is that the Internet of Things will continue to improve its understanding of users through enabled devices, as well as their desires and patterns of behavior. And deep-learning tools will inform research in areas such as biology, medicine, and energy development.

Hot Topic: Top Think Tanks


The latest edition of the Global Go To Think Tank Index compiled by James G. McGann, senior lecturer in international studies and director of the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program at the University of Pennsylvania, outlines many of the pressures challenging the leading producers of policy analysis, including growing competition for attention (as well as for funding).

It is no surprise to consumers of such analysis who are already drowning in information overload that fewer long-form reports and white papers are being downloaded, let alone read or acted upon. Research reports in the form of PDF documents are disappearing just as their print counterparts have, McGann says, and even the World Bank confessed recently “that nearly one-third of their PDF reports had never been downloaded.”

Twitter, Instagram, TED talks, and Snapchat might not be the ideal methods to effect change, but social media outlets—today's and those of tomorrow—offer examples of ways to at least break into the news cycle. So McGann's annual index emphasizes innovation among the world's think tanks in areas such as use of the Internet and social media, as well as developing new paradigms for their research work.

One conclusion McGann draws about think tanks' future prospects might qualify as what journalists would call a “buried lead”: death by big data. He writes: “Big data, which involves the collection and analysis of massive amounts of information to pinpoint critical data points and trends, may render think tanks and their staffs superfluous. This new analytic capability enabled by supercomputers, maybe the think tank of the future.”

In Foresight Signals' report on the index last year, we observed the prominence of future-oriented think tanks in several categories, and the latest index similarly acknowledges futurists' work, including:


  •          Brookings Institution retains the title of No. 1 think tank in the world. 
  •          Information Technology & Innovation Foundation is the top U.S. science and technology think tank, second globally to Germany's Max Planck Institute. ITIF was also ranked the 49th top think tank in the United States in 2015, as it was in 2014.
  •          Hudson Institute moves from 31st to 30th top think tank in the United States.
  •        The Millennium Project again places sixth for best new idea or paradigm; it also makes the list (42nd) for best quality assurance and integrity policies and procedures.
  •          Pew Research Center is praised for its innovative Fact Tank program, “written by experts who combine the rigorous research and quality storytelling.”
  •          RAND Corporation drops from seventh to eighth top think tank in the world and from sixth to seventh in the United States. Though RAND fell in most of the categories in which it is listed, it remains a multidisciplinary powerhouse.
  •         Resources for the Future remains the 34th top U.S. think tank and moves up one place, to 17th, for best new idea or paradigm.
  •          Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars surpasses RAND as the top think tank in transdisciplinary research and is listed as one of the “think tanks to watch.” Wilson rises from No. 10 to No. 9 worldwide, retaining the No. 5 spot among U.S. think tanks. 
  •          World Resources Institute retains its position from 2014 as the 15th top U.S. think tank, No. 1 in environmental policy, and No. 9 in transdisciplinary research.
  •          Worldwatch Institute also retains its 2014 positions as No. 35 in the United States and No. 3 in environmental policy.

Findings: How Youth View the Future


As each bright new generation of Americans stands poised to change the world, they seem to go through a phase in young adulthood of pessimism about the nation’s future. Now it’s the millennials who report the lowest levels of confidence—as did the Gen Xers and baby boomers in their late teens and early 20s, reports Pew Research Center.

In Pew’s November 2015 survey of Americans’ attitudes toward the government, just 37 percent of millennials said they had “a lot of confidence” in the U.S. future, compared with 45 percent of Gen Xers, 49 percent of boomers, and 56 percent of the silent generation; 20 years ago, Gen Xers were the pessimists, and 40 years ago, the boomers went through this crisis of confidence.

“This finding highlights one of the challenges of generational analysis, namely determining when differences among age cohorts are attributable to life stage rather than to a unique characteristic of a generation,” writes Pew research assistant Samantha Smith.

Analysis: Preparing Tomorrow’s Workforce


When is a low unemployment rate bad news? When workers have given up for various reasons, including lacking skills to attain well-paying jobs, says workplace consultant Edward Gordon, principal of Imperial Consulting Corp.

In January, the U.S. unemployment rate was 4.9 percent, but, Gordon writes, “95 million Americans have given up looking for a job. Of these, 45 million are capable of being employed, including 6 million retirees who still want to work. Also there are 20 million people working part-time who are seeking full-time employment.”

As society and the economy have advanced technologically over the last decades, workers have not attained the high skills they need to stay employed satisfactorily, Gordon writes. And this talent gap is costly for employers with vacancies to fill. As Gordon quotes one CEO, “We're spending more money on finding good people than we ever have. What we used to do to find customers, we're now doing to find workers.”

Gordon advocates public-private partnerships that increase investment in local education and training, noting that the need for higher-level skills will only intensify in the future.

Revival: h+ Magazine’s Future Day


Transhumanists and other fans of h+ (Humanity Plus) Magazine may have wondered at the brief suspension of publication at the end of 2015. The publishers announced on March 1 (Future Day) that h+ is in the process of reinvention as a weekly rather than daily digital journal. “Here in the early 21st century,” writes Peter Rothman, “the idea of what a magazine is or might be is a bit unclear. It seemed therefore to be time to reassess both the form and format of what we were doing and re-envision the future of h+ magazine or whatever it might become.” Details: Future Day 2016: The Return of h+ Magazine,” Humanity+ Media, March 1, 2016.

In Memoriam: Richard Spady


Seattle futurist and business man Richard Spady, president of the Forum Foundation and founder of the Stuart C. Dodd Institute for Social Innovation, died January 10 at the age of 92.

Spady was “a social pioneer in civic communications and religious innovation,” said Jay Gary, president of the World Network of Religious Futurists, in which Spady was an active participant. “He will be remembered by his colleagues from WNRF as a committed lay leader of the United Methodist Church, the inventor of the Fast Forum(r) technique for civic education, and the patron of religious futures research undertaken by Dr. Richard Kirby, past chairman of the network.

Spady also was a longtime supporter of the World Future Society and its activities.

“Anyone who came into the orbit of Dick Spady never forgot his enthusiasm for symbolic dialogue and citizen skills,” said Gary. “WNRF is glad his work will continue by his family through the Forum Foundation and National Dialogue Network.”
